Don't you even understand what manhood and freedom are? Don't you? Very well then. I'll teach you; I'll make you be free whether you want to or not." After his burst of rage, he began throwing the little pill boxes out the window. (Chapter 15).

The Balanovsky's Process:
""Bokanovsky's Process," repeated the Director, and the students underlined the words in their little notebooks.
One egg, one embryo, one adult-normality. But a Bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide. From eight to ninety-six buds, and every bud will grow into a perfectly formed embryo, and every embryo into a full-sized adult. Making ninety-six human beings grow where only one grew before. Progress. "(Chapter 1).

Hypnopaedic Condition:
"While the child was asleep, a broadcast programme from London suddenly started to come through; and the next morning, to the astonishment of his crash and crash (the more daring of the boys ventured to grin at one another), Little Reuben woke up repeating word for word a long lecture by that curious old writer ("one of the very few whose works have been permitted to come down to us"), George Bernard Shaw, who was speaking, according to a well-authenticated tradition, about his own genius. To Little Reuben's wink and snigger, this lecture was, of course, perfectly incomprehensible and, imagining that their child had suddenly gone mad, they sent for a doctor. He, fortunately, understood English, recognized the discourse as that which Shaw had broadcasted the previous evening, realized the significance of what had happened, and sent a letter to the medical press about it.

Hypnopaedic Conditioning is used to teach young males and females the moral values of the World State. One of the repeated phrases included, ""Alpha children wear grey They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm really awfuly glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able …"" (Chapter 2)

Religion in the World State:
In the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, religion was abolished to prevent men and women from developing beliefs other than those that they were conditioned to believe. Men and women born into specific castes were meant to carry out the duties predestined by the World State. Self exploration was frowned upon and so was individual scientific exploration. Mustapha was first a scientist before he was given the choice to be exiled, or train to be a World Controller. Despite his feelings of longing and regret to study, he continued to be one of the 10 World Controllers.
"'Our ancestors were so stupid and short-sighted that when the first reformers came along and offered to deliver them from those horrible emotions, they wouldn't have anything to do with them. Take Ectogenesis. Pfitzner and Kawaguchi had got the whole technique worked out. But would the Governments look at it? No. There was something called Christianity. Women were forced to go on being viviparous.'" (Chapter 3).

"'In the end," said Mustapha Mond, "the Controllers realized that force was no good. The slower but infinitely surer methods of ectogenesis, neo-Pavlovian conditioning and hypnopædia … Accompanied by a campaign against the Past; by the closing of museums, the blowing up of historical monuments (luckily most of them had already been destroyed during the Nine Years' War); by the suppression of all books published before A.F. 15O. There were some things called the pyramids, for example. And a man called Shakespeare. You've never heard of them of course.
Such are the advantages of a really scientific education. The introduction of Our Ford's first T-Model. Chosen as the opening date of the new era. There was a thing, as I've said before, called Christianity. The ethics and philosophy of under-consumption. So essential when there was under-production; but in an age of machines and the fixation of nitrogen–positively a crime against society. All crosses had their tops cut and became T's. There was also a thing called God. We have the World State now. And Ford's Day celebrations, and Community Sings, and Solidarity Services. There was a thing called Heaven; but all the same they used to drink enormous quantities of alcohol. There was a thing called the soul and a thing called immortality." (Chapter 3).

And there’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears—that’s what soma is." (Chapter 17). Mustapha Mond relates Soma to Christianity, trying to convince John that soma solves one of humanity’s oldest problems: dealing with unpleasant emotions.

Political Power in the World State: Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World explores a very important topic; the topic of political power. In the novel, individuals are predestined by the World State. All men and women are born into one of the five castes: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. These castes determine your social standing in World State. Alphas are the most intelligent, and are bred to be muscular and wise. Epsilons are the lowest in the caste system, and are bred to be retarded and ugly. The formal beliefs of the World State is, "'Community, Identity, Stability.'" (Chapter 1). Community is composed of the several castes systems, which have a predestined identity. By using the caste system and predestined identity, it is believed that world stability would occur.
"'We also predestine and condition. We decant our babies as socialized human beings, as Alphas or Epsilons, as future sewage workers or future …" He was going to say "future World controllers," but correcting himself, said "future Directors of Hatcheries," instead." (Chapter 1).




The Relationship Between Science, Religion, and Political Power:In Aldous Huxley's novel, Brave New World, science, religion, and political power is all interconnected. The World State controls its population by prohibiting the exploration of science, religion, and art. By prohibiting these aspects of society, it prevents individuals from the exposure to different ideas and beliefs than those they were conditioned to believe. By prohibiting scientific exploration, this prevents the creation of fatal weapons of chemical warfare, and other reproductive methods. The prohibition of religion exploration prevents society from the beliefs of Catholicism, Paganism, and other religious beliefs. Finally, the prohibition of art prevents individuals from having their own thoughts and options of pieces of both physical, musical, and literary works.

The State World has the power of the men and women of the world through the process of conditioning and hypnopaedia. During the stages of hypnopaedia, the State World morals, beliefs, and ideals are repeated several times. By doing so, the messages are implanted in the brains of all Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons as children. Individuals are familiarized with these ideals as they continue to age, learning more about the State World and how to be a proper citizen of the State.

The State World uses scientific and medical means for the use of reproduction. This means of reproduction is supposedly supporting the motto of, "Community, Identity, Stability." Due to the State's predestined identities, individuals are not faced with the option of identity exploration. The population of the State World perhaps are only compliant due to Soma (a drug that calms, sedates, and distracts the individual who is administered it.) Monstapha Mond, One of the World State Controllers describes it as "Euphoric, narcotic, pleasantly hallucinant."Due to its sedating qualities, it was used in vapour form to subdue the charging riot in the Park Lane Hospital for The Dying. (Chapter 15).

The suppressing of different beliefs and ideas prevents societal revolt against The State World. To remain in control, The State World predestines castes, beliefs, and ideas to "brainwash" its population into the conformity of set rules and regulations by the World Controllers. Any revolt against these rules results in exile. The exaltation of the rebellious ones is meant to keep society in conformation with the rules of The State World.

A Brave New History: Author Biography

Brave New World is a novel written by Aldous Huxley in the year 1932. Aldous Huxley was a British writer. He was born July 26th, 1894 in Godalming, Surrey, England. Aldous Huxley was the third son of writer and schoolmaster Leonard Huxley and his first wife Julia Arnold, who founded Prior's Field School. Aldous' family was heavily involved in the sciences. His grandfather, Thomas Henry Huxley was a zoologist; his brother Julian Huxley and half-brother Andrew Huxley both became biologists. Huxley also had a brother named Noel Trevelyan Huxley, who committed suicide after a period of depression.

Huxley began education in his father's botanical laboratory, then went to Hillside School, Malvern. His teacher was his mother, who supervised him for several years until she became terminally ill. After Hillside, he was educated at Eton College. Huxley's mother died in 1908 when he was only 14. In 1911, he suffered an illness which left him partially blind for two-three years.Aldous volunteered to join the army at the outbreak of WWI, but was rejected due to his partial blindness. Once his eyesight recovered, he was able to study English literature at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1916 he edited Oxford Poetry and later graduated (B.A.) with first class honours.

 

Aldous Huxley was heavily concerned about the important changes occurring at the time in Western civilization. Huxley was prompted to write novels in the 1930s about the serious threats posed by the combination of power and technical progress, as well as about what he identified as a drift in behaviourism.
 

One of his most known novels is Brave New World. During this time, Adolf Hitler (1889 - 1945) was not yet in power of Germany and that the Stalinist purges had not begun. Because of this, Huxley had not yet explored the full details and extremities of government control. In Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World, he imagined a society that used genetics and cloning in order to condition and control individuals. In this future society, all children are conceived in test tubes. They are genetically conditioned to belong to one of the five categories of populations, from the most intelligent to the least intelligent.
